SPRED - Special Religious Education

What is SPRED?

Spred New Life began in the 1980s. Spred stands for Special Religious Education and is a group for children who on account of physical or learning disabilities are unable to attend Catholic schools.

SPRED Groups

At the moment there are a number of Spred groups around the Diocese. The group for the North Staffordshire Deaneries meets here at St Wulstan’s, and has done so since 1998. If you know of any Catholic children in Special schools please pass on this information to their families – many parents are not aware that help is available.

Our Aims

We aim to support families in providing a Catholic education for their children and in preparing them for the Sacraments. Each child has a special helper, a Faith Friend. The groups meet about every two weeks on Saturday afternoons during term time for catechetical sessions. Each session has a theme. There are activities such as art and crafts, followed by a celebration in prayer, music and readings of the theme for the day, after which the children and faith friends share tea. At the end of term there is a liturgical celebration for the families to which the parish community is also invited, either Mass, the Stations of the Cross, or our Christingle service.

Volunteers

If you feel that you could give a few afternoons each term to be a Faith Friend to a child with special needs the group is short of helpers and we would be very pleased to hear from you. No formal qualifications are required, just a willingness to share your faith and plenty of patience!
